Last week, we welcomed the very first annual Festival Internacional de Teatro to our new City Theater.  More than 8 plays were performed over the course of the week. BuyPlaya was invited to attend the Festival and was honored to be present for the premiere of an adaptation of one of Moliere's classics: Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Middle Class Gentleman), directed and adapted by local director Matilde Altomaro and produced by Veintevaros Producciones.

As a theater fanatic, I was thrilled and very excited to finally find a place for art; a theater where the acoustics and the lighting combine perfectly in order to inspire oeuvres and talented actors.  We the public that were more than ready to embrace this brilliant adaptation of the five-act comédie-ballet.

Veintevaros Producciones is an independent artist co-op dedicated to the scenic arts.  They have been based in Playa del Carmen since 2005.  The co-op is well know for generating unique stage styles, fusion performance, circus, puppets, dance and theater. For the International Theater Festival, Veintevaros Producciones was given the daunting task of recreating a classic worthy of gracing the stage of our new City Theater.

This Independent Artist Co-op resides in Playa del Carmen where it fights to bring a cultural and artistic movement to the local population, far beyond the narrow scope of the tourist industry that engulfs our little city on the sea.Every actor and actress in this adaptation of Molière gave an outstanding performance, highlighting meticulous work of the director, Matilde Altomaro, in her triumph of creating a strong theater troupe.

El Burgues Gentilhombre (The Middle Class Gentleman) was just one of 8 pieces presented at the City Theater during the International Theater Festival. BuyPlaya also had the privileged honor to attend another rendition of Shakespeare's Othello directed and adapted by Jaime Lorca, Teresita Iacobelli and Christian Ortega, from Chile.

An incredible and avant-garde performance; the actors each played 2 characters at the same time. The result was astounding and dramatic.

The lighting of this play was perfectly designed to immerse the audience into the deep and dark world of Shakespeare.

Playa del Carmen does not have a reputation for fine arts, the sparkling white sand beaches that stretch out for miles along the dazzlingly turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea has dominated its reputaion for years.  Playa del Carmen has evolved and morphed over the years; from a small fishing village with dirt streets, to a thriving bohemian chic international community, and most recently, has taken the next step to becoming a full fledged city complete with loft style condominiums, shopping plazas, gourmet restaurants, and most importantly the brand new City Theater.  Luis Ernesto Lopez, the Director of Culture for Solidaridad, has made it his mission to bring to life his vision: Playa del Carmen: City of Artists, to make Playa del Carmen a place that has a reputation for art, theater and music as well as Mexican tradition, Mayan culture and the incredible tropical jungle and beaches that have, until now, drawn tourists from all over the world.

Over the years, Playa del Carmen has exponentially increased its population, bringing together a mix of different cultures and definitions to its identity.  Luis Ernesto Lopez, during his appointment as the Director of Culture, has realized his goal of getting Playa del Carmen recognized not only for its breathtaking natural ambiance, but also to be now be known as a City of Artists.

Teatro de la Ciudad, the new city theater

Before he started his term in this elected position, Luis Ernesto Lopez came from an artistic background.  He was a member of the musical group "Agua Mala" and also started the meritable project, Explayarte, a local music school that produces highly professional and inspired performances. Now as a servant for the community of Solidaridad, he has taken his years of artistic experience to another level, with new goals and a precise vision for our fair city by the sea.

In a recent interview, the Director of Culture stated, "it is crucial to consider art as a tool for social development." For this reason his project "City of Artists" is important for the continual progression of Playa del Carmen's identity as an internationally diverse, muti-faceted artistic community that will continue to draw inspiration from its combination of cultures and natural bounty.

In a recent conversation, Lopez explained that he new City Theater was "sold out" every evening during the first weeks of its opening; meaning to him that the residents of Playa del Carmen were more than ready to drink in the opera, ballet, performances, concerts, and theatrical events.  He stated, "Most of the population didn't even know that we had such amazing artists here in Playa, because most of the artists work in big hotels and we don't get the chance and opportunity to see them perform in public."

new-city-theater

Luis Ernesto Lopez sees art as a bridge between a society and its identity: "Raising the emotional frequency of a city helps people to get involved in a positive personal development". He thinks that when a society is motivated and culturally challenged, that same society becomes stronger and more confident.  His vision for the city of Playa del Carmen has been his focus these past three years and will continue far after his term is finished, it is the passion he carries within him for art and his community.

Lopez announced that this year, for the very first time, the annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival will be extended to the new City Theater as well as the Cultural Center.  The Jazz Festival is celebrating 13 years of annual musical events.  Each year the year number of international music loving tourists that flock to Mamita's Beach increases along with the internationally known artists that come to perform the famous stage on the white sands of  Playa del Carmen.

logo-jazz-festival

The Director of Culture smiled when he expressed the positive changes he has witnessed during his term as the Director of Culture for Solidaridad, he explained that it is easier than ever to get government permits for festivals and cultural events, there are more classes with more varied topics available to the public for personal discovery and growth, the Centro Cultural now has almost 900 students studying art, music and theater in all of its representations, there is an improved cannon of communication to the public from the Centro Cultural making it easier for locals of all ages to find information about events, expositions, classes and workshops.  These positive changes are just a few of the long lasting effects that the current Director of Culture has influenced for the residents of Solidaridad.  His goal has always been to portray Playa del Carmen as a cultural city; home to numerous festivals, a place where art is fostered and appreciated and where artists are inspired and cherished.

Now that the City Theater has opened its doors, he says the he feels that we are getting very close to his goal and his vision for the art community of Playa del Carmen.

On Friday June 12th, the construction site of the newest and most (so far) ambitious project by Menesse and GMB, was transformed into a classy venue set up with cocktail bars, DJs, well dressed waiters serving fancy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres  and a spectacular video projection on the main marquise.  This was truly one of the biggest Real Estate events in the history of the Riviera Maya.

Around 300 guests attended this incredible special evening in Downtown Playa del Carmen.  A lovely mix of future owners of studios, 1 and 2 bedroom and penthouse condominiums along with local Real Estate agents, lawyers and Law firms in support of this project as well as important members of AMPI (Asociacion Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobiliarios) mixed and mingled beneath a glamorous light display enveloped in upbeat music and surrounded by the beautiful people and social elite of the Riviera Maya.

This climactic event started with the impressive Groundbreaking Ceremony where Marc Pujol, General Director of GMB and Mariano Borges, founder of Menesse Condos, symbolically unveiled the Menesse The City cornerstone.  With a background of fireworks and impressive lighting of the grounds that evoked images of the fascinating and magical ancient Mayan ruins of the Riviera Maya, ground was ceremoniously broken and the cornerstone was laid.  The ceremony was projected on a big screen inside the tent to the delight of the audience.

The General Director of GMB proudly announced that Menesse The City has now sold out a total of 50% of the soon-to-be-constructed units. Those numbers are quiet impressive considering that this condo project is still at the groundbreaking stage. One of the most ingenious ideas of this great project is to include a Vespa (Scooter) with the sale of every studio.  Very few of these studios are still available.

The President of AMPI (Asociacion Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobiliarios) Mr. Miguel Angel Lemus took a few minutes to briefly address the audience and acknowledge the success of the Menesse The City project.  He recognized and hard work of both GMB and Menesse in getting this project off the ground. He also talked about the new federal laws that will soon regulate the Real Estate industry across the entire country of Mexico, making Real Estate transactions easier and more straightforward for investors from all over the world.

Jacopo Lincetto, official sponsor of the Italian brand Doimo and Piaggio Vespa was invited on stage to address the audience. Lincetto made possible the brilliant idea of including a Vespa Scooter with the purchase of a studio condominium at Menesse The City.  60 Vespas were brought to Playa del Carmen directly from Italy for the sole purpose of being offered with every studio purchase, since Vespa is not officially represented or sold in the Riviera Maya.

The delivery date for this enterprising project is scheduled for 2017, but considering its success, popularity and amazing location, we wouldn't be surprised to see it sold out very soon!

One of the many joys of living in Playa del Carmen is day (or weekend) tripping!  There is a seemingly endless supply of fantastic, magical and completely different places to see just a car ride (and/or maybe a boat) away!  Weekend getaways to tropical islands, colonial towns, archeological zones, and the dense tropical jungles are all within easy reach for even the most conservative travelers.

Ek Balam is a beautiful, while lesser known archeological site with fewer tourists than Chichen Itza or Tulum.  It is characterized by the incredibly well preserved original stucco covered altar at the top of its largest structure.  A site well worth visiting for those interested in the Mayan culture.

The town of Ek Balam is an excellent choice for a day outing at the archeological site or for the more adventurous, this tiny town of about 300 people is a wonderful place to settle in and experience the distinct rhythm of life of a Mayan town deep in the Yucatan jungle.  For transitioning into the peaceful bliss in harmony with the tropical jungle, Genesis Eco-Oais is a wonderful catalyst.

The Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside held its very first organizational meeting just over two years ago, on April 24, 2012. Since its inception they have been actively involved with many worthy charity endeavors throughout the Riviera Maya.  To commemorate another year of service the only English speaking club in District 4200, celebrated their 2nd year anniversary with pizza and cake at Wah Wah Beach Bar over looking the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea in the Riviera Maya, Mexico.

2 Years Serving Playa del Carmen

Each of the club's 38 members has donated time and money to the betterment of the community.  In the past year alone this wonderful group of bighearted expats and Mexican nationals has raised over $100,000 MXP for local charities.  Their friendship and enthusiasm is contagious and their good works have not gone unnoticed by the communities they serve.

First Meeting Members

This fun loving group has been involved with KISS- Keeping Kids in School, donating patience and love by reading to kids while helping them with schoolwork.  They raised funds for the program and collected school supplies for low income families in need.

They also dedicated hours of volunteer service to various beach clean-ups and even worked together with the local municipal government to clean, paint and restore a neighborhood park badly in need of attention in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen on 20th avenue and 40th street.

A well deserved pat on the back

A MUCH DESERVED pat on the back for a job well done for this philanthropic group who together with a Rotary chapter in Denver, Colorado provided $20,000 dollars to the local Red Cross and is expecting a 40 foot trailer packed with medical supplies and equipment worth up to a 1/2 million dollars as soon as July of this year.

Playa del Carmen Seaside Rotary Club

These Rotarians donated volunteer hours of service work and goods to a local women's shelter, and even collected money on the streets of Playa del Carmen for the Red Cross.  They worked with the local DIF, installing a water heater for their hydrotherapy system that is a great benefit to many families in the area.

 Seaside Rotary Club

For their 3rd consecutive year the Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside is will be fundraising at their annual golf tournament November 1st.  They look forward to another year serving the communities of the Riviera Maya and making this part of the world a better place for those who live here for generations to come.

Congratulations on a job well done!

May 2014-2015 bring even bigger and better achievements for this wonderful group of selfless individuals!  Thank you Rotarians!

Cruz Roja ~ The Red Cross located on Avenida Juarez and Avenida 25 has moved.  Since the 1st of November, the well known, non-profit medical organization has been operating from their new temporary location in the Villas del Sol neighborhood while their new building is under construction.

Red Cross Locations Playa del Carmen

The new building near the governmental annex  in Villa Mar II that houses the Transit, Judicial, Social Security and Civil Protection offices, is scheduled for completion December 7th, 2013, but does not appear to be on schedule for opening to the public by this date.  The Red Cross should be fully operating within the first months of the New Year, with new expanded services including a womens' health gynecological clinic, a pediatrics clinic, and a recovery area where patients can receive same-day treatments and minor out-patient surgeries that were not possible at the old facility.  The medical laboratory, pharmacy, ultrasound lab, dentist and optometrist services that were available at the downtown location will be relocated to the new location in Villa Mar II, near the governmental annex, as well.

The new distribution of the Red Cross buildings will be advantageous for the residents of Playa del Carmen, especially those who require immediate emergency assistance.  The ambulances will have better circulation throughout the city now that they will have access to a better parking area and will not be in the heart of the congestion of the downtown and beach traffic.

Be part of a centuries-old Mayan ritual. Push your physical limits. Experience the Caribbean Sea as only a select few have done before. Train with some of the Riviera Maya's most adventurous people.

Sacred Mayan Journey Riviera Maya

This November, the Sacred Mayan Journey is calling locals ages 18 - 65 to participate in their annual venture across the waters of the Riviera Maya. The Sacred Mayan Journey was once a tradition among the ancient Mayans living in the region, where they traveled by canoe from the Riviera Maya mainland all the way to the island of Cozumel to worship the goddess Ixchel. In recent years, Xcaret and Xel-Ha parks have hosted spectacular reenactments of this ceremony; locals train for months to dress in Mayan attire and row the distance from the Riviera Maya to Cozumel, and back again the following day.

"These kinds of actions allow us to show all the children the true meaning of our municipality: to show them solidarity, that the collaboration and efforts of parents, businesspeople and society give us the power to help those who need it,” stated Mauricio Góngora Escalante, Municipal President of Solidaridad, as he laid the first stone of the library and bathrooms for the preschool at the CONAFE school in Cristo Rey.

The project will be carried out with funds raised by the “Mano a Mano con Solidaridad” association. Headed up by Erika Michell Carrillo Rodríguez and local businesspeople, Mano a Mano is a non-governmental civil effort using fundraising events like “Un Kilómetro de a Peso por al Educación” (“A Peso per Kilometer for Education”) to get the resources for this construction project.

The new Munipal President of Solidaridad, together with his wife (the municipality’s first social worker Cynthia Osorio de Góngora), visited the students and teachers of the CONAFE preschool in the town of Cristo Rey, where he played with the kids and conversed with the teachers while scoping out the conditions of the school.

Góngora Escalante stated, “Being here today at this school is something special, seeing the kids with such a desire to learn.” He highlighted the importance of offering them the necessary tools to improve their quality of learning.

Góngora Escalante also reiterated his commitment to building a sports dome at the school so kids can enjoy recreational activities in an ideal environment.

“We the municipal authority fulfill our promises, and building the sports dome is one of them, so our children can be what we hope for them to be: people who build a better Solidaridad,” said Góngora Escalante.

Sergio Jiménez, founder of the CONAFE Cristo Rey school and local resident, pointed out the great work that Góngora Escalante has done for the locals and his immediate response to the demand for a higher quality education for the kids.

“He deserves recognition from each and every one of us. We’re confident that you, Mr. Mauricio, will be our best municipal president and will continue to support us as you have done thus far,” said Jiménez.

Góngora Escalante added that education is a priority for his administration, so he will fulfill his promise to make sure every school in the municipality of Solidaridad has a sports dome.

Any seasoned Riviera Maya traveler has been to a cenote or two (or 30). From the quiet beauty of Jardin del Eden to the zip line at Verde Lucero, these natural Yucatan Peninsula phenomenons are the lush, tropical Mexican version of the classic swimming hole. Formed by the peninsula's miles upon miles of underwater rivers combined with limestone erosion, cenotes appeal to almost every kind of Mexico traveler by combining the mystery of the jungle with the luxury of crystal clear, pool-like waters.

Each and every cenote in the Yucatan Peninsula has its own unique charm and natural beauty, whether it's a cliff for jumping, intriguing limestone formations or a school of tiny fish exfoliating your feet. The region's 6,000+ cenotes can all be categorized into only four different kinds, characterized by just how open they are to the sky.

1. Jug Cenote: Here, the body of water is wider than the opening into the cenote. Cenote Xkeken in Yucatan state, for example, has a skylight-style opening at the very top of a huge cavern.

2. Basin Cenote: Many favorite Riviera Maya cenotes fall into this category, featuring shallower water that's completely open to the sky. Favorite swimming spots like Jardin del Eden and Cenote Azul are both basin cenotes.

3. Cylinder Cenote: Just like it sounds, these cenotes are completely open to the sky, but lie deeper in the earth, creating a cylindrical shape. The most famous cenote, Ik Kil, is the perfect example of a cylinder cenote.

4. Cave Cenote: These cenotes are less explored by your average traveler, but they're every bit as beautiful... if not more so. They have a horizontal entrance leading to completely enclosed caverns, usually with some dry areas and some underwater areas. Rio Secreto just outside of Playa del Carmen allows you to extensively explore the breathtaking formations of an immense cave cenote in a safe, guided environment.

In the past few years, Playa del Carmen has transformed into a foodie paradise! Whether you're living in Playa del Carmen or just passing through, a visit to at least one of these local favorites is essential to experiencing this beach city's eclectic vibe.

Almirante Pech Playa del Carmen restaurant

Almirante Pech

The new kid on 5th Avenue! Almirante Pech has crazy design with all kinds of interesting style details. Open-air dining and a huge outdoor bar are just the beginning: the food is pretty incredible. I'm obsessed with their airy panuchos, and a friend of mine is still talking about their watermelon gazpacho months later.

Yaxché

Located right on 5th Avenue at the corner of Calle 22, Yaxché serves up Mayan fuision cuisine. While the presentation of each dish has its own modern twist, the ingredients and flavors are just what you'd find in Yucatan.

100% Natural

You won't find anything too crazy here... 100% Natural is all about natural ingredients and fresh food. They're famous for their fruit and vegetable juices, but I go for the cranberry wrap. With a tropical garden-style atmosphere on 5th Avenue between Calle 10 and 12, it's my favorite little lunch spot!

Sur Argentina Steakhouse

Right at the 5th Avenue entrance to Calle Corazón, this outdoor steakhouse sits beneath a giant tree with hanging lanterns. The romantic vibe, upscale atmosphere and fun people watching make for a memorable dinner out on the town. I'm not much of a steak person, but the soups and empanadas are pretty great.

Fusion

Whenever I'm in Playa, I try to talk my friends into drinks at Fusion. Here, you'll find indoor and outdoor dining right on the beach at the end of Calle 6, with live concerts or fire shows every night. Most of the tables are on the sand, so skip the heels and bring your flip flops.

Pizza Pazza

I know, I know... a hole-in-the-wall, pizza-by-the-slice joint doesn't really fit on this list. Still, my brain is filled with fond memories of freshly baked pizza at 3 am after a night bar-hopping in Playa. Pizza Pazza has numerous locations up and down 5th Avenue; you might or might not find any tables, but they all have little counters where you can savor your slice for just a few pesos.

Trattoria Pizzeria Romeo

I didn't discover this little gem until recently! Set on Calle 4 between 10th and 15th Avenue, it has Italian chefs, wood-fired ovens and homemade pasta. It's been highly recommended to me by several Playa del Carmen locals, so it must be good!

Babe's Noodles and Bar

I challenge you to find a Playa del Carmen resident who doesn't love this place. A great location on Calle 10 sets Babe's near all the action, serving a combination of European and Asian cuisine in a colorful atmosphere.

La Cueva del Chango

Choose a table in the relaxing gardens or in the restaurants cave. This restaurant on Calle 38 has a truly unique atmosphere serving a mix of Mexican and Mayan cuisine, perfect for when you're looking for a little something different.

Alux

Alux just might be the city's most famous restaurant. Enjoy cocktails or an unforgettable dinner inside a real cavern, complete with a beautiful bar, dining and a contemporary lounge ambiance. This is what Playa del Carmen is all about.
