Anyone who has ever lived in or gone off the beaten paths of tourist areas in Mexico, can't help but notice something; the overwhelming and saddening population of dogs and cats, homeless, starving, and needing loving homes.  Amazing volunteers and incredible people in the Playa del Carmen area, like Laura Raikes from Wales, have begun non-profit organizations like Coco's Cat Rescue to control the animal population and rescue them from the streets.

Laura began this incredible organization by just being a young girl who loves animals.  When she was young, she would rescue anything from bats and cats, to dogs, and baby lambs and nurse them back to health.  After moving to Mexico, Laura lost her beloved cat, Coco to the streets and decided it would be her life mission to help control this problem and prevent others from feeling the same loss she felt with Coco. Laura began volunteering at spay/neuter clinics at area vets and realized with all the support she had encountered, she wanted to do something bigger.  With the help and support of others with the same purpose and love for animals, Coco's Cat Rescue was born!

Sunday night marked the 4th Anniversary for Coco's and was celebrated at Blue Parrot with an open bar and appetizer donation.  Guests danced the night away to live music by rock and oldies band, Crazy Toy, and a special drumming ensemble from Quetzalcoatl.  Friends and supporters of this wonderful organization made donations, bid at the silent auction, and came to celebrate and raised over $12,000 for the cause!
