On 21 of December 2012, the 5,125-year long count Mayan calendar will come to an end. The year 2012 has been designated as the Year of the Maya across Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize by the Global Heritage Fund. More than 500 Maya-themed events will take place in Mexico alone. The yearlong celebration of Maya culture, past and present will include Maya-themed sporting events and re-enactments, ceremonies, dances and fests. To promote the glorious heritage of the Mayan civilisation, 250 events will be taking place in the area for the Mundo Maya 2012 program.

For some it is the end of the world, while for some it is the beginning of a new era. The transition maybe a matter of debate but all can definitely agree on one point which is that nothing can be better than witnessing the start from its end. Traveling to the Mundo Maya in the year 2012 is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as various festivals have been lined up to celebrate this end which is definitely not worth missing.
