To relieve the residents of Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie from a cold and hard Christmas, Sunwing Airlines is ready to take their flights off to one of the most popular vacation destinations, the Riviera Maya MLS zone. “We are very pleased to welcome nonstop service from YMM to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on board Sunwing Airlines’ state of the art B737-800 aircraft. This is a major breakthrough for the community and will be welcomed by travelers who currently drive to Edmonton and often have to overnight to catch flights to Mexico,” said Scott Clements, chief executive at the Fort McMurray Airport.

The flights to Mexico on Sunwing’s B737 aircraft are scheduled to begin Dec. 19. Flights will start in Grande Prairie and connect through Fort McMurray to take advantage of its new Customs’ capability. Opened by Transport Canada in 1986, the Fort McMurray Airport is in the midst of a $258-million expansion project, the centerpiece of which is a terminal that is expected to open in 2014 and is five times the size of the existing one. Designed to accommodate 250,000 passengers a year, the airport at the gateway to the oilsands handled 750,000 passengers last year and is on a pace to exceed 800,000 in 2012.

Clements also added that international flights will be possible this fall, with the introduction of Canada Customs at the Fort McMurray Airport, and they will continue to seek new flights to other destinations in advance of the new terminal opening in 2014.
